YES3 Aftersave

Release Date:        Oct 2024

Funding Source:   NIH P30AG021342

This external module was an unplanned addition to YES3.  This software extension ensures REDCap “calculated fields” (fields based on calculations and not participant responses) are updated in real time, a vital precondition for projects using YES3 Dashboards.

This module is very helpful for tracking statuses such as enrollment status, reasons for study discontinuation, and visit outcomes which may be calculated based on fields across different forms. The utility extends beyond the YES3 Dashboard because it addresses a limitation of REDCap’s “Rule H” which requires that forms be saved in order to run.

This auto-update feature was an instant success. Due to its popularity with our project designers, we released Aftersave as a stand-alone EM to the Vanderbilt REDCap Consortium in October 2024.

Description

YES3 Aftersave updates and saves calculations involving data from multiple forms in real time.

It works by first identifying all forms having fields that figure in calculations on other forms. When any of these `aftersave` forms is saved, all of the affected calculations on `dependent` forms are updated and saved. The default REDCap recalculation behavior of bypassing empty forms can be overridden for any dependent form. A multi-pass recalculation is performed and ensures complex expressions involving interdependent calculated fields are resolved correctly.

Get Started

YES3 modules are supported through software development grants and individual research grants.

  • For Yale/YNHH users, YES3 modules may require fees for local support and implementation.
  • For the global community, YES3 modules are made available at no cost for implementation through the Vanderbilt Consortium.
    • Administrators should familiarize themselves with the software to provide local support
