What is a Study, Study Profile, and CapID?

A study refers to a collection of REDCap projects that collect data for the same overarching purpose.

Research Studies
For research, a study includes all REDCap projects associated with a single research protocol (identified by one IRB number). The Principal Investigator (PI) is responsible for all REDCap project linked with that protocol.

Non-Research Studies
For non-research, a study includes REDCap projects that share the same purpose, target population, and governance.  Common examples include quality improvement and operations.  The project owner is responsible for all REDCap projects linked with that work.

Study Profiles and Cap IDs
Most studies use a single REDCap project.  However, some studies require multiple REDCap projects to manage different components of their work. To identify and group all the REDCap projects associated with the same study study, we assign a CapID

The CapID allows the REDCap Admin team to:

  • Link related projects across one or more servers
  • Manage end-user support more effectively
  • Track related work under a single study profile

The CapID serves as a unique identifier that links all REDCap projects belonging to the same study.  Use the CapID when requesting a new REDCap project under an existing study.
